Benefit pairs public, scientists

A party will unite the public with some of the top cancer researchers in the nation Feb. 17 when the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center hosts "Dinner with the Scientists." Coctails and dinner are scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hotel Del Coronado, 1500 Orange Ave.

As a fund-raiser for the non-profit research institute, seats cost $150 per person or $1,200 for a table of eight. A renowned scientist will sit in the ninth seat at each table.

The event's scheduled guest speaker is Dr. Daniel D. Von Hoff, a pioneer in the field of translational cancer research. Von Hoff, who runs the biggest drug development program in the country, will address "New Directions for Cancer Drug Development in the 21st Century." He has helped create more than a dozen anticancer drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration during his career. Von Hoff is currently professor of medicine, molecular and cellular biology and pathology, and director of the Arizona Cancer Center at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

"This event offers an opportunity to mingle with some of the top cancer researchers in the naiton and to hear from Dr. Daniel D. Von Hoff, an Entrepreneur, a scientist and a physician who leads the country in the nmber of clinical trials," said Dr. Albert A. Deisseroth president and chief executive of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. The center is based in La Jolla at 1035 Altman Row.
