Commemorating a Special Day
Exactly 15 years ago, on December 1, 1990, three physicians, Ivor Royston, Tom Shiftan and Allan Goodman came together with a vision for using laboratory discovery to produce more effective, less toxic forms of cancer treatment. Their dedication to this dream has enabled the SKCC to become an impressive research and therapy development operation. On behalf of the many individuals with cancer who will benefit from the center's discoveries over the next 15 years, we want to thank all of you who have worked so hard to make the dream of our founders become a reality.

Promising New Partnership
Peregrine Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced this week that Avid Bioservices, Inc., Peregrine's wholly owned manufacturing subsidiary, has entered into a manufacturing agreement with the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. Avid will provide process development services to the SKCC and will perform cGMP manufacturing of a novel therapeutic antibody for preclinical studies and clinical trials. This antibody is initially being tested for the treatment of lung cancer. The contract will start immediately and continue into the 2006 calendar year.

Steven W. King, chief executive officer of Avid stated, "The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center is an innovator in its focus on translational research, including supporting the clinical development of promising new cancer therapeutics. Avid's expertise, scale, breadth of service and state-of-the-art manufacturing facility make us ideally suited to work with SKCC to produce the clinical supplies needed to progress this exciting new drug candidate through the development and regulatory process."

Dr. Jan Schnitzer, M.D., Scientific Director and director of the vascular biology and angiogenesis program at the SKCC commented, "Advancing the clinical development of promising new cancer therapies is an important part of our translational research mission, and we are pleased to be working with the highly experienced and supportive bioproduction team at Avid to help us move this novel approach into human trials."

Save the Date for Dinner with the Scientists!
The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center is pleased to present Dr. Mary-Claire King at the Dinner with the Scientists on Monday February 27, 2006 at the Hotel Del Coronado. She is one of the world's preeminent breast cancer researchers and is known for her work on hereditary breast cancer and the BRCA 1 gene. She is an international authority on the application of genetics to human disease.

Construction Update
Each week brings great advances to the construction of SKCC's new research center. The square chalk markings indicate footings for the steel columns. These areas will be excavated and filled with steel-reinforced concrete, and will serve as the force-absorbing bases for the structural steel columns.

In this holiday season, please take time to remember those who are currently engaged in a battle with cancer. We ask your help for these people through a gift to the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center.
