No Charity Tax
According to Suzy Orman's 9/11/06 article in the Yahoo Finance on line Newsletter, if you are 70.5 years or older, you will now be allowed to donate up to $100,000 each year from your IRA to a public charity and not owe any tax on that money in 2006 and 2007. That is, you won't first have to claim the money as a taxable RMD before you make the donation.

This can be a useful way to support a charity and meet your RMD requirements without boosting your adjusted gross income. The donation can't also be claimed as a deduction, so it makes the most sense for those of you who don't itemize.

First-of-its-Kind 'Jeans for Genes' Benefit Gala Raises Funds for Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center
Spurred by the excitement of horseracing at Del Mar, more than 275 guests at the first-ever "Jeans for Genes" benefit gala Saturday, August 19 ponied up money to benefit cancer research at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center.

Joined by honorary "Jeans for Genes" chairperson Caroline Kimmel, attendees in black tie formal wear and glitzy jeans enjoyed trackside cocktails and then cheered for their favorite horse and jockey in the 9th race Sidney Kimmel Cup. Philanthropist and clothing magnate Sidney Kimmel was also honorary chairperson. The signature event included dinner and dancing.

"A year to the day following our 15th anniversary celebration and groundbreaking ceremony at SKCC's La Jolla 10-acre campus, which was presided over by Caroline and Sidney Kimmel, Caroline Kimmel returned to participate in SKCC's Jeans for Genes gala dinner at the Del Mar race track," said Dr. Albert Deisseroth, president and CEO of the non-profit cancer center. "We admire both Sidney and Caroline Kimmel for their generosity and commitment to education, cancer research, the arts and social justice."

Trackside at the
Del Mar race track for the first-ever 'Jeans for Genes' gala benefiting the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center are: SKCC Board of Trustees Chair Geri Ann Warnke; Caroline Kimmel, honorary Jeans for Genes chairperson; and Dr. Albert Deisseroth, president and CEO of the non-profit cancer center.
